Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), in plain terms

An FBA is the process of figuring out why a behavior happens — its function — so the team can respond to the cause instead of just the symptom. Here's how it works and how ABC data drives it.

What an FBA is trying to answer

Every persistent behavior is working for the student in some way. An FBA identifies that function — usually one of four:

• Escape / avoidance — to get out of a demand, task, or situation.
• Attention — to gain a response from adults or peers.
• Access — to obtain an item or activity.
• Sensory — the behavior itself is reinforcing.

How ABC data drives the FBA

You determine function by looking at the antecedent → behavior → consequence pattern across many incidents. If a behavior almost always follows a demand and almost always ends with the task being removed, the data is pointing at an escape function. That conclusion should come from the data, not a hunch — which is why consistent ABC logging is the foundation of a defensible FBA.

From FBA to BIP

The FBA identifies the function; the Behavior Intervention Plan acts on it — teaching a replacement behavior that meets the same need in an acceptable way, and changing the antecedents that trigger it.
